Abstract
We use a lab-in-the-field experiment to assess the common human resource policy that awards prioritiziation of female employees in evaluations and promotions (implemented as additional points in an evaluation form). We test whether the policy is effective in increase female employees' evaluations (i.e., higher total score), and whether male employees are evaluated more highly in sub-categories as response to the policy (i.e., higher scores on the factors that contribute to the total score).

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Total Score on Evaluation; Total Score on Evaluation excluding Female prioritization
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
The evaluation score is the sum of a score provided on communication skills, technical skills, experience in the professions, and meeting targets for all employees. Female employees recieve an additional five points in the score.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We use a lab-in-the-field experiment to assess the common human resource policy that awards prioritiziation of female employees in evaluations and promotions (implemented as additional points in an evaluation form).

Managers are requested to evaluate their employees on various dimensions, with a total score out of 40. For a random subset of managers, the evaluation includes additional points for female employees.
Experimental Design Details
Not available
Randomization Method
Randomization is done in the office by a computer.
Randomization Unit
Individual managers (who are evaluating multiple employees).
Was the treatment clustered?
Yes

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
350 managers
Sample size: planned number of observations
We estimate that each manager will evaluate 3 to 5 employees (i.e., sample size of 1050 to 1750 evaluated employees)
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
175 managers per treatment arm
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
