Abstract
This pilot examines the impact of entrepreneurial training for students in Mexican high schools on earnings, employment, and socioemotional skills. The purpose of the pilot is to a) conduct a small qualitative/quantitative study comparing an entrepreneurial curriculum alone to an enhanced curriculum that focuses on growth mindset, b) understand the incentive structures that work to get normal secondary teachers engaged with the curriculum, and c) field test the survey and tracking protocols for a larger, properly-powered RCT to follow.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
We focus on three primary outcomes: business creation, reported earnings, and growth mindset indicators. Data on the first two outcomes will be gathered through follow-up surveys conducted two months after program completion. Growth mindset indicators will be constructed with information from baseline and endline surveys.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Target Population

Students enrolled on the last (6th) high school semester from schools in Chiapas that comply with 3 criteria:
1. Have teachers and principals interested and able to participate in a raffle to receive funding and training to teach the program
2. Are located within 1.5 hours’ drive time from San Cristobal de las Casas (Escalera’s headquarters)
3. Are not located in areas that present a risk to the implementation or evaluation teams.

Evaluation Design

Phase 1: We will randomly select half of the target schools (7 or 8) to receive the entrepreneurial curriculum alone.
Phase 2: The enhanced curriculum (growth mindset skills) will be randomly assigned to half of the students enrolled in 6th semester of all 17 target schools.
Experimental Design Details
Randomization Method
Randomization done in office by a computer
Randomization Unit
School level (clusters) for entrepreneurial curriculum and student level (individuals) for enhanced curriculum.
Was the treatment clustered?
Yes

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
There are 17 high schools with the characteristics described on the Target Population Section.
Sample size: planned number of observations
Based on the information provided by schools’ principals, there will be approximately 960 students enrolled on 6th semester by the time of implementation.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
A) Entrepreneurial Curriculum: 8 treatment schools and 9 control schools.
B) Enhanced Curriculum: Based on the information provided by schools’ principals, there will be approximately 960 enrolled on 6th semester by the time of implementation. We will randomly assign half of them to receive the enhanced curriculum and the other half will be in the control group.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
