Interventions

Intervention(s)
In this experiment we experimentally assessed employer's perception of post-secondary
degrees from various types of college (elite vs. non-elite, public vs. private) in
combination with different types of migration status (local vs. internal migra-
tion after high school vs. internal migration after graduation) using a resume
correspondence study design. We construct fi ctitious, but realistic, resumes
that randomly vary the job applicant's characteristics including gender, re-
ligion, college and migration background. 13500 of these resumes were
submitted online in response to 2700 job postings across multiple occupations in the
Greater Jakarta area. Only job vacancies were selected that request minimal
work experience to highlight the salience of college credentials to prospective
employers.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
The experiment is based on a correspondence study design involving a matched-pair design.
Experimental Design Details
The matched pair design involved the following 5 treatment groups:
- T1: Javanese + elite college degree from Javanese college
- T2: Javanese + non-elite college degree from Javanese college
- T3: Internal migrant + elite college degree from Javanese college
- T4: Internal migrant + non-elite college degree from Javanese college
- T5: Internal migrant + non-elite college degree from outer island college

Randomization Method
Randomization done in office by a computer
Randomization Unit
Job vacancies
Was the treatment clustered?
Yes
