Abstract
This study uses an experimental approach to examine two research questions related to mosquito awareness campaigns.

(1) How much does a one-on-one awareness campaign increase the knowledge about the proliferation of mosquitos, mosquito transferable diseases and prevention possibilities and how much does it not only changes the knowledge but also induces behavioral changes.
(2) To what extent can additional text message reminders about the content of the awareness campaign augment the knowledge-levels and increase behavioral changes towards the prevention of mosquito proliferation.

The study was developed in partnership with IRESO e.V., Rotary Rio de Janeiro and Redes da Mare.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
Intervention I: Citizens assigned to the first intervention group receive a one-on-one mosquito awareness campaign. This awareness campaign is delivered by trained students in the city of Terespolis. The campaign covers topics related to mosquito and mosquito transmittable diseases such as mosquito proliferation, methods to prevent mosquito proliferation, symptoms and prevention of Dengue, Yellow Fever, Zika and Chikungunya.

Intervention II: Citizens assigned to the second intervention group receive the same awareness campaign as citizens in Intervention Arm I. Additionally, they receive one text message per week for 10 weeks after receiving the awareness campaign.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Increase in Information about Mosquito transmitted diseases measured by
- questions regarding perceived risk of mosquito-transmitted diseases
- knowledge about symptoms
- knowledge about the way in which dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya are transmitted
- knowledge about the action that prevents dengue
- knowledge about vaccinations.

Increase in self-reported behavior to prevent mosquito proliferation measured by:
- The last time that the person or someone in the family looked for accumulated water in the house
- The last time that the person or someone in the family looked for accumulated water outside the house
- Amount of times the person talked to neighbors about implementing actions to prevent mosquito proliferation

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
The trial design is a reduced two-by-two experimental design, to test efficiently two interventions in one trial. We test the main effect of the awareness campaign and the combined effect of awareness campaign+text messages in comparison to the control.
Experimental Design Details
Randomization Method
The Randomization was operationalized via the Randomizer Function in Qualtrics during the Baseline Questionnaire.
During the Baseline Survey each respondent is with the randomizer function of Qualtrics randomly assigned to a Group. Later in the survey flow, this Group value is used as criteria in display logic to inform the student if the person is supposed to receive the awareness campaign.

Was the treatment clustered?
No
