Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We will provide seed funds for randomly-selected campaigns on ioby.org, an online crowdfunding platform. We will have two treatment groups for which we will vary the manner of seed funding. Comparing across treatments, we will examine how outcomes are affected by the nature of the seed funding. We will also compare to a control group to glean the effects of seed funding.
Experimental Design Details
We provide an initial seed donations of $100 to randomly selected civic crowdfunding campaigns. In one treatment, campaigns will receive a $100 seed donation from a single donor, while in another treatment, campaigns will $25 seed donations from four donors. Comparing across treatments, we will examine how outcomes are affected by the number of seed donors involved.
Randomization Method
Block randomization done in office by computer
Randomization Unit
We will randomize by crowdfunding campaign.
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
70 treated units; >100 untreated units.
Sample size: planned number of observations
70 treated observations.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
