Abstract
The objective of the study is to understand how intentions to migrate articulate with aspirations of young men in a rural district in Mali. A randomized controlled trial is attached to a wider survey on aspirations and migration which was submitted to young men aged 18 to 35. The survey will serve to link migration intentions to general and labor market aspirations, and the specific intervention, based on documentaries showing role models from the surveyed individuals' district. The intervention is intended to examine to what extent the diffusion of positive/ negative life stories surrounding migration and the local labor market affects individuals aspirations and intentions to migrate.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
The intervention consists in the screening of a single 20 minutes long film at the village level. All baseline interviewees were asked (but not reauired) to assist in the screening. In total, four different films were screened, each in 50 different villages. One films portrays two past migrants, who had come back from Ghana and Libya and who succesfully started businesses employing local youth. Another one showed a past migrant who had come back from Libya injured and unable to work. The third film portrays local entrepreneurs who succesfully started and grew local businesses without migration. The last film (placebo) is a Malian comedy about a man being pursued by a sorceress who wants to marry him.

Films were screened in the villages using portable projectors connected to a computer, and the projection was done on a white sheet.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Intentions to migrate, destination of intented migration, willingness to change labor market status.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Mental health, subjective poverty, actual migration (funds for a third survey wave permitting).
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
Mental health is captured through a module specifically designed to capture depression prevalence, and which has been tested (among other locations) in Burkina Faso by researchers from INED and INSERM.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Randomization was stratified according to the share of households in each village with past and current migrants, the average education level of surveyed individuals in the household, and the average number of unemployed individuals surveyed.

Treatments were allocated randomly within strata, and each village had one film screened during February/March 2019.

Experimental Design Details
Randomization Method
Randomization done in office by a computer (using Stata version 14).
Randomization Unit
The randomization was done at the village level.
Was the treatment clustered?
Yes
