Abstract
Foreign languages are increasingly important in this internationalized society, especially for immigrants, non-native students, and workers in multinational corporations. We examine whether being exposed to a non-native language environment would affect economic decision-making. To explore this effect, we give a reading and listening test to subjects in foreign/native language, then we elicit their individual preferences using their native language. This study aims to clarify the causes of irrational decision-making and provide language policy implications concerning immigrants.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We plan to conduct the experiments in Taiwan using university students as subjects. This experiment, which has two between-subject treatments, will be conducted in person with the platform oTree. First, the subjects need to complete a language test. They will be randomly assigned to either the native or foreign language treatment. Second, they report the degree of mental fatigue by themselves. In the third part, they are going to make three economic decisions in random order: food choice, effort allocation, and a revised risk game from Eckel & Grossman (2008). All the instructions and questionnaires, except for the language tests, will be written in their native language (Chinese), so we only manipulated the between-subject design in the language test.
