Abstract
In a previous experiment, Gomez-Gonzalez et al. (2021) find that people with Ukrainian-sounding names suffer from discrimination when contacting amateur football clubs. Specifically, they examined Ukrainian, German, and Belarussian-sounding names in Poland.

Because of the war in Ukraine, we want to repeat the experiment. We want to examine if the attitude towards people with Ukrainian-sounding names changed. We want to contact half of the clubs with an additional signal – namely, we want to see if a small text below the application “Peace for Ukraine” changes the response rate. This gives us an opportunity to see if discrimination changed compared to our previous analysis. Additionally, we can examine if this change is connected towards the attitude of the applicants.

Finally, we want to contact 400 coaches after we finished the experiment and ask them to participate in the survey. The survey includes questions regarding the coaches age, the team’s composition, and similar related questions.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Our main interest are the following variables:

1. Response rate differences for native- and foreign-sounding groups.
2. Response rate differences for native- and foreign-sounding groups depending on the content of the mail.
3. Examining how survey responses influence the response rate differences.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
1.1. Response rate differences between the three foreign groups.
2.1. Response rate differences between the three foreign groups depending on the content of the mail.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We want to contact amateur football clubs Poland. The sample includes 1,437 coaches.

We will use only the same names as in the previous experiment. Thus, we have typical native- and typical foreign-sounding names.
We will randomly allocate one name to one club. We will never contact a club more than once. We will use the different regions to use block randomization to ensure that groups are not overrepresented in specific areas.

We will contact clubs with the following text (but in Polish):

Subject: Trial practice

Hello,
I would like to take part in a trial training session with your team. I have already played at a similar level. Could I come for a trial training session?
Many thanks,

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
We randomize at the regional level.
Sample size: planned number of observations
We plan to contact 1,437 coaches.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
1. 700 foreign-sounding emails, 737 native-sounding emails
2. 719 emails with a signature, 718 without a signature
3. 217 survey requests for coaches that received an email form a native-sounding name, 182 survey requests for coaches that received an email form a foreign-sounding name
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
