Abstract
In this randomized evaluation, we study the effects of a teacher training intervention that aims to improve well-being and teaching practices amongst teachers in Jordan's public schools. We implement a cluster-randomised design, with schools being the unit of randomization and teachers being the unit of observation. In the treatment group, teachers will complete various modules over a 3 month-long period. Outcomes will be measured via self-administered surveys (well-being measures) and classroom observations (teaching practices).

Interventions

Intervention(s)
Teachers in the treatment group will receive reading materials, complete tasks (theoretical and practical), and attend 3 in-person training sessions over 2.5 months (total contact time=30 hours). They will complete three different modules during this time, one on well-being and two on teaching competencies. Learning communities will be formed in each school to support learning activities. Teachers will receive a completion certificate (after passing a test) towards the end of the implementation period. Control group teachers will not receive any training. They may be invited to participate in the program in the future.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Outcome 1: Wellbeing of teachers (self-reported)
Outcome 2: Improved teaching and learning practices that account for students' social and emotional well-being (classroom observations)
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
1. "Well-being" comprises of financial, social, physical, psychological, and cognitive well-being. Survey items corresponding to each of these sub-indices have been taken (as is) from Jordan's recent National Teacher Wellbeing study (2023). We will use all survey items to construct two indices for each type of wellbeing - one being a simple sum of responses and the other using principal component analysis.
2. Questions in the classroom observation tool have been adapted from the Jordanian Ministry of Education's classroom observation tool. It will be administered by trained supervisors from the Ministry of Education. The tool contains around 15 items that measure (broadly) learning environment, student engagement, and in-class assessment. Impact will be reported both at the item level and for aggregated indices (as defined in the tool).

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
The study follows a cluster-randomised design. We randomize the intervention at the level of schools run by the Ministry of Education across 4 regions of Jordan. The sample of schools will be equally split into a treatment and a control group after stratifying by key school-level characteristics. The unit of observation is a teacher. We will measure outcomes via two in-person surveys (a pre-intervention baseline and an endline conducted 4 months after starting implementation) and classroom observations (only at the endline stage).
