Abstract
This study investigates the opinion of Lebanese students on free nature of migration decisions. Using a vignette experiment, we explore the causal effects of i) the context of the decision, ii) how the worsening of the agent’s situation is defined, iii) peer effects and iv) the altruistic inclusion of other’s outcomes by the agent. Using an individual post-vignette survey, we explore the association of the perception of respondents on the free nature of migration with their sociodemographic characteristics and attitudinal opinions.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
The vignette survey experiment will be completed in paper format by Lebanese university students, during one of their classes, in the presence of their teacher. Respondents will not be incentivized.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Attitudinal opinion on the free nature of migration of the hypothetical agent described in the vignette on a 7-point scale.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Each vignette consists of a short description of a hypothetical migration situation. Respondents will be asked on the free nature of the migration of the agent.

The factors included in the vignette design echo major migration determinants : context of the decision, worsening of the agent’s situation, peer effects and altruism.

Each student will randomly be assigned 1 version out of the 16 possible versions of the vignette.

After the vignette, a post-experimental individual survey collects information on sociodemographic characteristics and opinions.
Experimental Design Details
Randomization Method
Each individual respondent will randomly receive a version of the vignette among the pool of 16 alternative versions of the vignette.
Randomization Unit
Randomization unit is each individual student.
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
No clustering of treatments.
Sample size: planned number of observations
1600 individual observations (students).
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
Approximately 100 students.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
Estimated number of respondents by version is about 100. This is consistent with an acceptable predictive power (5 % significance level, 80 % power and medium size effects, h=0,5).
