Abstract
Responses time often provide additional information in message exchanges. Most social media sites now allow users to observe an accurate response time. How does this feature affect user’s responding behavior? To answer this question, we designed a two-stage game between a sender and a receiver. Using a series of experimental measures, we investigate if receivers use response times to make decisions, and if senders manipulate the revealed response times. Additionally, we examine the role of gender, creativity in the manipulative use of response times.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We designed a two-stage game between a sender (S) and a receiver (R) who share partial interests in four experimental conditions. In all four conditions, S has a chance to make real efforts to learn the true state. She needs to report a signal of the state to R based on her own interest, and her report does not have to be the same as the true state. In half of the conditions, R guesses the true state after observing S's signal. In the other half of the conditions, R guesses the true state after observing S's signal and S's response time. We also manipulate S's information about response times. In half of the conditions, S does not know her response times would be used by R. In the other half, S is aware that her response times would be provided to R.

We run four conditions in two groups. In the control group, S are not aware of the response times, and R make decisions without and with response times. In the treatment group, S are aware of the response times, and R make decisions without and with response times.
