Abstract
Our project focuses on the gendered preferences in forms of political action. Given the consistent differences in the types of actions in which women participate in comparation to men, and the still significant gender gap in party related activities, we want to understand the characteristics that make one type of action more or less attractive for women. This document pre-registers the research design for a survey experiment we will conduct in July 2023 in an online panel to a sample of the Spanish population. We discuss the recruitment of participants, the main hypotheses we seek to test with the conjoint experiment, and the analysis we plan to conduct for testing the hypotheses . All changes to the strategy discussed in this document will be made transparent in the publications presenting the findings.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
The data for this study will be collected from an online access panel survey in Spain. This survey will be administered by Netquest to a representative sample of the internet population. The total expected sample size is of 3000.
Intervention (Hidden)
In this study we are interested in what drives participation for specific modes of action for men and women. With this objective we will employ a choice-based conjoint experimental design (Hainmueller et al 2014 and Leeper et all 2020) where respondents will be asked to make a forced choice between two hypothetical forms of action to react to a political decision they disagree with. Each respondent will be presented with five tasks of this type. The description on forms of action will contain information about the organizers, the location of the action, support to the action by the population, the time it will take and whether the action will be individual or collective.

Experimental Design Details
The experiment is placed first in the survey. Each mode of action will have 5 attributes. Two attributes have three levels and the other three attributes have two levels (see Table 1). Respondents are requested to choose between the two forms, this task will be repeated 5 times for each participant. The order of attributes will be randomized for each respondent in the first tasks and kept constant for the rest of tasks. The complete setting of the conjoint, with attributes and levels is presented below.
Table 1. Attributes and levels.
Attributes Levels
Level Takes places in your town (municipio) vs Takes place in Spain
Organizers Organized by an association or group of citizens vs Organized by a political party
Conflict The majority of the population supports the action vs Population is divided between supporters and non-supporters of the action
Individual/collective The action will take place individually vs The action will take place with other people
Time The action will take 15 minutes vs The action will take 2 hours vs The action will take a day
Randomization Method
Randomization done in office by a computer
Randomization Unit

Was the treatment clustered?
No
