Abstract
There are concerns regarding the sustainability of social enterprises that aim to achieve both financial and social objectives. This is due to the additional cost required to tackle social problems. The Social Progress Credit (SPC) program is an initiative designed to support social enterprises by providing cash incentives proportionate to their social performance. Given that the pursuit of social performance may come at the expense of financial performance, we conduct a nine-year RCT (2020-2028) to investigate the impact of the SPC program both on the financial and social performances of social enterprises. Our preliminary results suggest that social performance-based incentives can improve social performance without compromising the financial sustainability of social enterprises.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We recruit the SPC participating enterprises for five year (2020-2024) and randomly assign them into the treatment and control groups. The treatment group will receive the conditional cash incentive proportional to their social performances for three years. Please, see the attached analysis plan for the details.

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
235 Social Enterprises
Sample size: planned number of observations
If assumed balance panel without attrition, we expect 940 observations (235 firms x 4 years)
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
110 firms in the treatment group and 125 firms in the control group
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
