Abstract This project is a experimental study that explores the changes of labor market expectations of students when given information intervention. It aims to answer the following research question: Whether and how does the information intervention (introducing AI technology, particularly Large Language Model (LLM), e.g. ChatGPT) affect vocational post-secondary students’ career choice and labor market expectations. Intervention (Public) We will conduct a randomized controlled trial in a field context. The interventions are delivered in video format. Students will be randomly assigned into groups presented with videos which contain positive, negative, neutral information regarding LLM, and information not related to AI, respectively. The information we use is retrieved from scientific articles and reliable sources. We will conduct a randomized controlled trial in a field context. The interventions are delivered in video format. Experimental Design (Public) This is a randomized controlled trial. We will determine whether participants randomized to the group treated with positive/negative information regarding AI tools tended to choose/avoid occupations involved AI within a sample of vocational post-secondary students. Additionally, we will explore the mechanisms through different channels. We will track research participants’ (1) realized internship choices; and (2) realized occupational choices after graduation. This is a randomized controlled trial. We will determine whether participants randomized to the group treated with information regarding development or applications of AI tools tended to choose or avoid occupations involved AI within a sample of vocational post-secondary students. Additionally, we will explore the mechanisms through different channels. We will track research participants’ (1) realized internship choices; and (2) realized occupational choices after graduation.
Intervention (Hidden) Participants will be randomly assigned to one of four following conditions: (1) Participants in the [controlled group] will not receive any AI-related information. Instead, they will receive a snap of non-AI-related or labor market-related information. The time length of viewing that information is comparable to the information provided in the other group; (2) Participants in the [AI-development group] will receive neural, objective information regarding the development of LLM; (3) Participants in the [AI-positive group] will receive positive information (statistics and statements) regarding AI tools in the context of labor market outcomes, in addition to providing the same information presented in the [AI-development group]; (4) Participants in the [AI-negative group] will receive negative information (statistics and statements) regarding AI tools in the context of labor market outcomes, in addition to providing the same information presented in the [AI-development group]. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of three following conditions: (1) Participants in the [controlled group] will not receive any AI-related information. Instead, they will receive a snap of non-AI-related or labor market-related information. The time length of viewing that information is comparable to the information provided in the other group; (2) Participants in the [AI-development group] will receive neural, objective information regarding the development of LLM; (3) Participants in the [AI-comprehensive information group] will receive addition of content detailing three specific applications in the workplace: text generation (e.g., Gen AI Chatbot-powered writing assistants); video generation (e.g., Gen AI Chatbot generated media content); image creation (e.g., Gen AI Chatbot enhanced graphic design), in addition to providing the same information presented in the [AI-development group].
Secondary Outcomes (End Points) (1) wage expectations (own and others) (2) belief towards the labour market (3) belief towards self ability (1) wage expectations (own and others) (2) belief towards the labour market (3) belief towards self ability (4) moods/emotions
