Abstract
This project measures bias in social preferences against different age groups using a money allocation task. We also elicit stereotypes about different age-groups and test how they connect to potential biases in social preferences.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
Varying the age of the recipient in a money-allocation task. The intervention is "within-subject", i.e., participants make four decisions, towards recipient aged 18-24, 25-44, 45-64, and 65+. The decisions are presented in a random order.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Allocations in the Help-or-Harm tasks towards recipients from different age groups. Participants make four decisions, towards recipient aged 18-24, 25-44, 45-64, and 65+.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Stereotypes towards the different age groups (18-24, 25-44, 45-64, 65+).
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
This is an online experiment. We recruit a US representative sample on Prolific (based on sex, age, and ethnicity; N=1,000). In the questionnaire, participants make decisions in a money allocation task (Help-or-Harm task). We vary the age of the recipient “within-subject”, i.e., participants make four decisions, towards recipient aged 18-24, 25-44, 45-64, and 65+. The decisions are presented in a random order. We also elicit stereotypes regarding the same age-groups.
Experimental Design Details
Not available
Randomization Method
The treatments are implemented "within-subject". The order of the decisions is randomized by Qualtrics.
Randomization Unit
The treatments are implemented within-subject.
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
1000 individuals (recruited on Prolific, representative sample of US population based on sex, age, and ethnicity)
Sample size: planned number of observations
1000 individuals (recruited on Prolific, representative sample of US population based on sex, age, and ethnicity)
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
1000 (treatments are implemented "within-subject")
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
