Abstract
I conduct an experiment with UC Berkeley students and affiliates to test conditions under which experiences with one type of green technology impact beliefs and preferences towards other green technologies.

Participants are randomized into treated and control groups, where treated subjects are made to have a negative experience with green technology. Following treatment, subject beliefs on five classes of green technology are surveyed.

I also test whether treatment increased the amount subjects are willing to donate to one of three randomly chosen non-profits: a generalist non-environmental one, a generalist environmental one, and a specialized environmental one.

To limit potential demand effects, response data will be withheld from the researchers who directly interact with subjects while experiments are underway.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Subject recruitment and check-in will be handled by Berkeley xLab staff and will be tested in cohorts of up
to 36 members. Upon arriving at the xLab, subjects will be provided with a consent form to sign.
Treatment then occurs.
Following this, subjects will take an ~20 minute survey on xLab-provided computers.
After completing the survey, subjects will be presented with a debrief form to explain the overall intentions of the research.
Finally, subjects will meet with xLab staff to receive payment by check.

Total participation time for subjects will be one session lasting less than one hour.

Randomization Method
Cohort randomization done in office by a computer. Random numbers were generated for all cohorts; within each week, the upper half of cohort values were assigned to be treated. Individual-level randomization done procedurally by Qualtrics
Randomization Unit
Experimental session [principal treatment]. Treatments are randomized within-week to ensure each week has an equal number of treated and untreated sessions.
Individual level [charitable giving randomization]
Was the treatment clustered?
Yes

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
12 experimental sessions ("cohorts") + 2 pre-test sessions. Assuming no change in methodology following pretests, pretest data will also be included.
Sample size: planned number of observations
Approx. 500 subjects
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
216 subjects (6 cohorts) control, 216 subjects (6 cohorts) treated.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
