Abstract
Background:
Dementia and depression are highly prevalent and interconnected conditions among adults and are associated with individuals’ distress and rising mental health conditions in Pakistan. Effective, saleable and feasible interventions are needed. Music based interventions have shown promising effects, but the current evidence base is inconclusive. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of different music interventions on the depressive symptoms of people with dementia and depression.
Method:
This study used a simple random sampling technique, randomized controlled trial. Thirty participants will be recruited from psychiatric departments in Rawalpindi. They will be equally divided into two groups: control group and experimental group. In controlled group (15 participants) the data will be collected from normal population and in experimental group (15 participants) the data will be collected from dementia patients having comorbid symptoms of depression. To assess the intervention four block designed will be created in which participants will experience positive and negative music-visual induction on Psychopy. The study employed a two-way factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the effectiveness of music intervention in reducing symptoms, improving cognitive insight and enhancing quality of life.

Experimental Design Details
Block 1 = Positive Music Induction
Intervention: Participants will be exposed to positively valence music (cheerful tunes).
Duration: The intervention will last for a predetermined period (20 seconds) while participants engage with the music.
Block 2 = Positive Visual Induction
Intervention: Participants will be exposed to positive image.
Duration: The intervention will last for a predetermined period (20 seconds) while participants focus on positive image.
Block 3: Negative Music Induction
Intervention: Participants will be exposed to negatively valence music (dissonant tones).
Duration: The intervention will last for a predetermined period (20 seconds) while participants engage with the music.
Block 4 = Negative Visual Induction
Intervention: Participants will be exposed to negative image.
Duration: The intervention will last for a predetermined period (20 seconds) while participants focus on negative image.
T2 = Dementia Severity Rating Scale (DSRS)
Assessment: After the intervention, participants will complete the Dementia Severity Rating Scale to assess their dementia severity symptoms.
Block 5: Negative Music Induction + Positive Visual Induction
Intervention: Participants will experience the negative music (30 seconds) as in Block 3 but paired with positive visual stimuli (joyful scenes).
Duration: The duration of the intervention will remain constant to isolate the impact of the stimuli combination.
T3 = Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS)
Assessment: The effect of positive and negative visual-auditory induction is measured by positive and negative affect schedule (PANAS).
Block 4: Positive Music Induction + Negative Visual Induction
Intervention: Participants will listen to positively valence music (30 seconds) similar to Block 1 but paired with negative visual stimuli (distressing images).
Duration: Consistent timing will be applied to this intervention block for accurate comparison with the other blocks.
T4 = Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS)
Assessment: The effect of positive and negative visual-auditory induction is measured by positive and negative affect schedule (PANAS).
