Abstract
In this project we study individual’s fairness preferences over institutions (i.e. the rules of the game), and to detail the connection between preferences over institutions and preferences over ex post distributions of earnings.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We collect experimental data on nationally representative samples in the US and Sweden to measure conditional fairness preferences on both institutions and outcomes.
Experimental Design Details
The experiment with gather data on subjects decisions regarding the distribution of bonus payments of "workers" for their completion of an online real effort task. The subjects will choose among the following distributions of bonus payments:
{(6,0), (5,1), (4,2), (3,3)} in the "Luck treatment" and from:
{(6,0), (4,1), (2,2)} in the "Efficiency" treatment.

Additionally, we will vary whether the subjects make their choice prior to the workers completing the task (Institutions treatment) or after the task (Efficiency Treatment), for a 2x2 design. In an additional treatment arm, the Luck/Institutions treatment will be divided among a Default treatment, where subject see a default option of (6,0), and a no default option.

Subjects are randomly sorted into treatments, with 250 in each treatment. The subject population will be representative samples from the US and Sweden.
