Abstract
There is a culture of silence around sexual harassment. Victims usually refrain from speaking out about their experiences and bystanders generally do not intervene or voice concern. We study how traits of stories about sexual harassment affect people’s attitudes about victims' and bystanders' silence. We test our predictions in survey experiments within the Norwegian Crime Survey.

Experimental Details

Interventions

Intervention(s)
The intervention consisted of a survey experiment about sexual harassment. Vignettes contained randomized content: whether the story about the harassment focused on the victim's victimization or their accusation of the perpetrator; the gender of the victim and harasser; and two sexual harassment behaviors. We test hypotheses about the first two randomized components. The third has the function of making the harassment behaviors in the vignettes more representative of all harassment behaviors.

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
There is no clustering. The survey has about 20,000 individuals.

Sample size: planned number of observations
~20,000
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
Each treatment arm has about 2,500 individuals.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
With a sample of 20,000 individuals, we can detect effects smaller than 0.05 standard deviations.
