Abstract
This study aims to explore the causal relationship between ethics of care and social entrepreneurship. Specifically, whether greater levels of care cause individuals to prefer social entrepreneurship over regular entrepreneurship. We plan to conduct an experiment in which care values are activated in a sample of entrepreneurs through a stimulus related to a story of a person in a vulnerable situation. The experimental design allows to isolate care values from any other factor that may have an impact on decision-making around entrepreneurship and helps to identify whether care values indeed guide the decisions of entrepreneurs in preferring certain types of businesses.

This is important because it can help us to understand why people choose to support social ventures. If we can identify the factors that motivate people to care about others, we can design more effective interventions to promote social change; work on discovering effective ways to promote the value of care in society; develop strategies for recruiting and retaining social entrepreneurs; and design programs and policies to address social problems.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
Participants randomly assigned to the treatment group will be exposed to a stimulus designed to evoke care-related values. Their preferences will then be compared to those of participants who did not receive the stimulus, specifically in terms of social entrepreneurship versus commercially oriented entrepreneurship.
Intervention Start Date
2025-05-01
Intervention End Date
2025-12-31

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Individual’s preference between a socially oriented venture and a commercially oriented venture.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
Individual’s preference is a binary variable that takes the value of 1 if the individual chooses to hypothetically invest in a socially oriented venture and 0 if they prefer a commercially oriented venture.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
- Gender
- Age
- Family
- Socioeconomic background
- Narcissism
- Care values
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
- Gender: A categorical variable that indicates the gender of the entrepreneur.
- Age: A numerical variable that represents the age of the entrepreneur.
- Family: A binary variable that indicates whether the entrepreneur has children or not.
- Socioeconomic Background: A categorical variable that reflects the entrepreneur's perception of their economic status across different age groups.
- Narcissism: A measure of the entrepreneur's level of narcissism.
- Care values: Categorical variable that measures the level of care values post-intervention of the entrepreneur.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Two randomly assigned groups will be exposed to different stimulus, and subsequently requested to express their investment preference.

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
At least 422 entrepreneurs
Sample size: planned number of observations
At least 422 entrepreneurs
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
We will have 2 groups uniformly distributed randomly. Both the control and treatment groups will consist of at least 211 entrepreneurs.
