Abstract
This study involves a survey comprising an information provision experiment, a discrete choice experiment, and a probability choice experiment. The survey will be distributed to Danish bachelor’s students at Danish universities. This registration concerns the pilot study, in which approximately 500 students will be invited to participate from November 15 2024. The final survey will be launched in March/April 2025, with 20,000 students invited to participate.

Experimental Details

Interventions

Intervention(s)
In the pilot, we will divide respondents into three groups that receive different information related to student aid: Basic, Repayment and Uptake.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Express interest in getting more information
Intended loan take up in 2025
Intended loan amount while studying
Intention to work while studying
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
All primary outcomes for the pilot are elicited in the survey.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Share of loan takers among all bachelor's students
Actual loan take up in 2025 (main outcome in the final survey)
Having a student job while studying
Actual loan amount while studying
Valuations based on stated preference experiments

Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
Share of loan takers among all bachelor's students: Elicited in survey
Actual loan take up in 2025: Based on administrative records
Having a student job while studying: Based on administrative records
Actual loan amount while studying: Based on administrative records
Valuations based on stated preference experiments: Elicited in survey

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
The students will receive different information regarding student loans. In particular, one of the treatment groups will receive feedback on whether their perceptions of student loan take up in their field of study at their educational institution was correct or not.

Randomization Method
Randomization is done by the platform used for the design of the survey and collection of the responses. DST Survey and Norstat are responsible for setting up the survey. They will implement quotas to ensure that the sample sizes of the treatment groups are similar across treatments.
Randomization Unit
Individual
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
0
Sample size: planned number of observations
We will invite 500 students to participate in the pilot. We expect around 100 responses. For the final survey, we will invite 20,000 students to participate.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
In the pilot, we will have 3 treatment arms of equal sizes. We thus expect to have 30-35 in each group (Basic, Repayment and Take up).

In the final survey, we plan to have a control group (that perhaps will get generic information), a group that will get feedback on their loan take up perceptions, and a group that will get feedback on their perceptions of social norms related to loan take up.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
We have not conducted power calculations for the pilot. We will do this for the final survey.
