In response to an editorial request (as part of a "Revise and Resubmit" editorial decision), we are conducting a follow-up experiment that is very similar to the original experiment with a few exceptions:
The task has been refined to make it more difficult/costly to simply use generative AI to complete the task. Instead of asking people to write promos for visiting NYC, we are asking them to write promos to get people to book at stay at a new (fictional) vacation resort. The details about the resort are shared through a short video, and each promo needs to relate to a different target audience group, which is communicated through a picture. All of these features make it much more costly for participants to simply use generative AI to quickly produce a large quantity of promos.
The experiment also makes it clear that the overall creativity of each promo will be determined based on its novelty and usefulness.
Finally, we have included several new questions after the experiment to better understand the reasoning behind participants' behaviors in the experiment.
We plan to collect responses from 1,000 individuals (250 in each of the four treatment cells) in mid-/late-August of 2026.
The updated survey instrument is attached.
