Abstract
We plan to administer a survey experiment to extract parents' preference for grades and results from standardized tests when making investments. We plan to randomize participants on prolific to several scenarios where we can control the information they see. We will vary the grades and test results from students, as well as their gender. We will also parents explicitly about their views on grades and exams and whether they make investments depending on whether ability or skill are complements or substitutes.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
Participants will be randomly presented with information via grades and standardized test scores and then make both monetary and time investment advice decisions for a parent they might know. We will also ask parents their explicit views about grades and standardized test results and whether they view ability and skill to be complements or substitutes in their investment decisions.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
1) Parental preferences for grades and standardized test results
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
We do not know whether parental investment decisions (e.g. tutoring, helping with homework, disciplinary actions) are made via the information they received about their child's skill via grades or standardized exam scores. This study will help us understand how they make those decisions.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
See pre-analysis plan

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Participants will be randomly presented with information via grades and standardized test scores and then make both monetary and time investment advice decisions for a parent they might know. We will also ask parents their explicit views about grades and standardized test results and whether they view ability and skill to be complements or substitutes in their investment decisions.

Parents will see a randomly selected six scenarios out of 25 possible scenarios for both male and female students and then for monetary and time investments.
Experimental Design Details
Randomization Method
We will randomize which scenarios parents see via the qualtrics survey software.
