| Field Paper Abstract | Before | After We investigate what narratives can influence the Indonesian public to be more receptive to progressive policies and development ideas centered on social justice and the environment. We conduct an online experiment randomly exposing participants to a short narrative about the Indonesian economy. Each narrative appeals to different principles, from equal opportunity to environmental protection. We find that each narrative has its merits and flaws. The narrative that calls for preventing development from displacing people and damaging the environment, along with the narrative that emphasizes human development, shows the most promise in cultivating people’s receptivity. Meanwhile, narratives that call for rebalancing economic distribution and promoting equal opportunity have a limited impact and even generate backlash against progressive ideas. We also find that simpler messages are more effective in shifting perceptions. Conjoint analysis affirms that environmental protection is not a paramount concern for the Indonesian public. Our insights will inform the policy advocacy work of many think tanks and may help civil society organizations wage more effective campaigns. |
