Abstract
Islamic radicalization is an important correlate of civil conflict around the world. In Northern Mozambique, an Islamist insurgency involved the recruitment of youths who have been radicalized. We study the impact of a training module countering radicalization which targets Muslim teenagers in the city of Pemba. The module, produced and reviewed by Islamic institutions, focuses on the value of tolerance relating to identity, the value of education, and the value of resilience in face of risky propositions. All along contents are related to the scriptures in the Qur’an. We measure short-term impacts through a survey and a set of behavioral measurements. These include views about religion and politics, as well as prosocial behaviors, support for peace, trust, and discrimination.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We will conduct an RCT randomizing a training module at the individual level. Our sample will be composed of 18 and 19-year-old Muslim individuals recruited from their homes in the city of Pemba. The training module, produced and reviewed by Islamic institutions, focuses on the value of tolerance relating to identity, the value of education, and the value of resilience in face of risky propositions. All along contents are related to the scriptures in the Qur’an. We will measure outcomes through implementing (subsequently) a survey and behavioral activities. Approximately two months after the first round of outcome measurement, we will implement a second round through phone calls.
