Abstract
In recent years, Ethiopia has experienced a significant increase in conflicts, leading to the death and displacement of millions of people, destruction of essential infrastructure worth billions of dollars, and exacerbation of human rights violations. This can be attributed to ethnic prejudice, stemming largely from historical tensions between different ethnic groups. Misinformation about ethnic groups on social media; the current ethnic-based federal structure; and the manipulation of historical grievances by those seeking political gain have exacerbated existing prejudicial attitudes and behaviors. This study examines the host family program (HFP) at the University of Gondar leveraging an experimental design to evaluate the impact of intergroup contact facilitated by the program on prejudice towards an outgroup. HFP enables meaningful contact by providing an opportunity for students and their host families to exchange cultural practices, beliefs, and ideas and establish deep relationships that can engender the formation of positive attitudes of both participating students and their host families. The study will employ both self-reported survey measures and behavioral games (e.g., the dictator game, trust game, and public goods game) to assess whether the HFP leads to actual behavioral changes, such as increased altruism, trust, and cooperation, towards the outgroup.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
This study examines the impact of the host family program (HFP) at the University of Gondar. HFP connects students with host families in the city of Gondar to determine if prolonged interaction between students from diverse backgrounds and Amhara host families can diminish prejudice among them. HFP enables meaningful cross-ethnic contact by providing an opportunity for non-local (non-Amhara) students and their host families (Amhara) to exchange cultural practices, beliefs, and ideas and establish deep relationships that can engender the formation of positive attitudes of both participating students and their host families.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Self-reported prejudice towards Amharas (feeling thermometer, social distance, resentment of Amhara privilege); Contact with Amharas (number and quality of friendship with Amhara); Decision in Dictator Game; Trust towards Amaharas (self-reported measure and decisions from a trust game and public goods game)
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
See attached pre-analysis plan document for more details on the outcomes and how they will be measured.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Motivation for non-violence (opposition of violence, active bystandership, hope for peace)
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
See attached pre-analysis plan document for more details on the outcomes and how they will be measured.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Students who completed the baseline survey and who identified themselves as non-Amhara at the baseline survey (n=739) were randomly assigned to control and treatment groups. The treatment involved pairing students with specific host families while no pairing would be done for those in the control group. The students who are assigned in the control group were informed that due to resource constraints, we only managed to match half of randomly selected students with a host family.
