Primary Outcomes (End Points) The two primary outcome measures, will be attendance rate in their maths and/or English GCSE classes, and the final grade achieved for the subject. This data is collected using the college administrative datasets. The two primary outcome measures, will be attendance rate in their maths and/or English GCSE classes, and the final grade achieved for the subject (GCSE: A*-C is pass, below C is fail). This data is collected using the college administrative datasets.
Randomization Method Randomisation performed using STATA. Randomisation performed using Stata.
Planned Number of Observations 1250 (after opt-in) 1000 (after opt-in)
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms 315 students per treatment arm, evenly distributed across 4 arms (including control). 250 students per treatment arm, evenly distributed across 4 arms (including control).
Power calculation: Minimum Detectable Effect Size for Main Outcomes Power calculations, adjusted for pre-treatment covariates and baseline outcome measures. We assume an opt-in rate of 50%. Primary outcome variable: continuous, centred on 3, SD of 1.2. N = 313 per arm, MDES = .151 Power calculations, adjusted for pre-treatment covariates and baseline outcome measures. We will be collecting learners’ opt-in responses before randomisation. Binary outcome measure (pass/fail). With power set to 0.80 and alpha set to 0.05, and N = 250 per arm, observable treatment effect = 5.9%, MDES = .141.
