Abstract
People often rely on advice from e.g., parents, teachers and colleagues to make important career decisions. In a first pre-registered data collection effort (https://www.socialscienceregistry.org/trials/13803), we used an online experiment to study gender differences in career advice. For this purpose, we asked participants in the role of advisers to give advice to "workers" (other participants in the experiment). In this second wave of data collection, we intend to replicate our first wave in a sample of participants with experience in management or teaching. We also append our study with an additional set of vignette tasks.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We conduct a three-part experiment. In session 1, participants in the role of workers work on a math and science quiz. Upon completing the quiz, they indicate their confidence in several ways, forming a worker “portfolio”. In session 2, a different set of participants in the role of advisers sees the portfolio of six workers and advises each worker whether they should go for an advanced (A) or a basic (B) version of the task. In session 3, each worker receives the advice from one adviser and decides which of the two versions of the task to pursue. In addition, advisers in session 2 also respond to 12 advice vignettes that are not related to the workers in this experiment.

Randomization Method
A computer. We randomize which 12 out of 24 possible vignettes advisers see. Some of our key tests rely on between-vignette comparisons, which happen both between-subject and within-subject. Other tests will compare the results between this wave and our first wave (https://www.socialscienceregistry.org/trials/13803/) baseline treatment, where in some sense our first wave serves as a control treatment to our current data collection effort.
Randomization Unit
The individual, as per the above.
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
525 advisers and 105 workers.
Sample size: planned number of observations
525 advisers and 105 workers.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
525 advisers and 105 workers in our baseline treatment. Some of our tests will compare the results between this wave and our first wave (https://www.socialscienceregistry.org/trials/13803/) baseline treatment. See the pre-analysis plan for more details.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
