Abstract

We study the impact of offering a mental health app on employment outcomes and job application behavior for low-income people experiencing psychological distress.

Job search Effort: Whether participant: sent a CV, CV quality (step 1), sent interview clip, interview clip quality (step 2), sent sample work, sample work quality (step 3). We use applicant data. We may restrict the sample to women actively seeking employment at baseline.

Current Employment. Whether employed, hours worked, and absenteeism. We use survey data at baseline and 1 and 2 months.

Experimental Design

At baseline, participants complete a survey measuring psychological distress, employment, income, and interest in a part-time, flexible, and temporary data-entry job. 2/3 of participants are then randomized to early access to a mental wellbeing app. The remaining 1/3 receive late app access. Before the control group receives app access, participants will be invited to apply for a part-time and flexible data-entry job that they can do from home.
