Abstract
This study extends the previously registered randomized controlled trial “Excuse My Behavior: Social Norms and Moral Costs” (AEA RCT ID: AEARCTR-0015264), which examines how replacement and waste excuses affect environmentally relevant consumption choices. Participants make incentivized decisions between cheaper, more carbon-intensive options and more expensive, less carbon-intensive alternatives in the domains of clothing, food, and transportation. The extension addresses two questions. First, it examines what happens when the excuse statements focus on the more sustainable rather than the less sustainable option. Second, it varies whether social norms and moral costs are elicited before or after the consumption choices. This allows us to study whether the previously observed effects on reported norms and moral costs may partly reflect adjustments made after a decision. The study examines effects on consumption choices, descriptive and injunctive social norms, moral costs, and perceived replacement and waste likelihood.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
In a survey experiment, participants face three hypothetical but incentivized consumption decisions. We provide them with different replacement and waste statements that focus either on the less sustainable or the more sustainable consumption option.
Intervention Start Date
2026-09-09
Intervention End Date

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Consumption choices in three domains: Travel, food consumption, and clothing.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
For deatails see PAP

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Norms: Beliefs about consumption choices of others and ranking of social appropriateness. Moral costs: Measured by multiple price lists
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
For details see PAP

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Participants are randomly assigned to one of eight experimental conditions. All participants receive objective information relevant to three incentivized consumption decisions. In the Info condition, participants receive only this information. The Replacement Excuse (RE) and Waste Excuse (WE) conditions additionally present statements focusing on the less sustainable option: either someone else may choose the option or it may otherwise remain unused or be wasted. The reversed conditions (RRE and RWE) apply the corresponding reasoning to the more sustainable option. Finally, three additional conditions repeat the Info, RE, and WE treatments but elicit social norms and moral costs before rather than after the consumption decisions.
