Experimental Design Details
This is a randomised controlled trial with 4 trial arms. The pool of employers with more than 250 employees that haven’t registered on the government online service by the 24.11.2017 will be randomised into one of the four treatment groups detailed in section 7: control, extra guidance, social norms, honest disclosure. Each group will receive a different letter from GEO urging them to register and report their gender pay gap.

Randomisation will be conducted at the employer level, and in the case of private sector employers, at the ‘parent company’ level. To clarify, private sector companies need to submit their data at the 'legal entity' level, but are often link to other legal entities through 'parent companies'. These will all receive the same letters.

Outcome measures
Primary: reporting (compliance) levels, 7 and 10 weeks from when the letter is sent.
Secondary: registration levels 7 and 10 weeks from when the letter is sent.

Sample size is approximately 7000, split about evenly across 4 trial arms.

Given a sample size of 7000, and a plausible base line of 1%, the minimum detectable effect size is 1.119 percentage points. This is assuming alpha of 0.05 and power of 0.8.
Randomization Method
A researcher conducted the randomisation using STATA.
