Abstract We study the causal link between workers’ sexual activity and subsequent performance or productivity. Our experimental approach induces excitement in subjects’ partners by exposing them to a video with explicit sexual content. Then, we use partners’ excitement as an instrument for subjects’ sexual activity to estimate (via an instrumental variables approach) the causal impact of sexual activity on individual performance. We also explore the causal link between sexual activity and happiness. We study the causal link between sexual activity and performance. Primary Outcomes (End Points) Performance. Measure as performance in an arithmetic task Performance. Measured as performance in an arithmetic task
Planned Number of Clusters Approximately 858 couples, depending on take-up. This includes 858 experimental subjects and 858 partners of the experimental subjects Approximately 860 couples, depending on take-up. This includes 860 experimental subjects and 860 partners of the experimental subjects.
Planned Number of Observations Approximately 858, depending on take-up Approximately 860, depending on take-up. In anticipation of some attrition, we will have a sample of 1,000 couples. That is, we expect a response rate of 86%.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms Treatment group: approximately 429 individuals (half of take-up) Control group: approximately 429 individuals (half of take-up) Treatment group: approximately 430 individuals (half of take-up) Control group: approximately 430 individuals (half of take-up)
