Abstract
This is a follow-up experiment of the study reported in Gächter, Starmer, Tufano, 2017, "Revealing the Economic Consequences of Group Cohesion", CeDEx Discussion Paper No. 2017-09.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Group cohesion; Group Minimum Effort; Minimum Effort Guesses; Minimum Effort Guess Confidence; Social Value Orientation measures.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
Group cohesion (for details on how it will be constructed, please, see Gächter, Starmer ,Tufano, 2017. Revealing the Economic Consequences of Group Cohesion. CeDEx Discussion Paper No. 2017-09); Group minimum effort in the weak-link game; Participants' guesses (and their confidence) about the minimum effort in their group; Social-Value-Orientation measures (for details, e.g., Murphy, R. O., Ackermann, K. A., & Handgraaf, M. J. J. (2011). Measuring Social Value Orientation. Judgment and Decision Making, 6(8), 771-781).

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
The experimental design will follow closely the design of the main experiment in Gächter, Starmer and Tufano, 2017, "Revealing the Economic Consequences of Group Cohesion" (CeDEx Discussion Paper No. 2017-09) while implementing minimal changes to address (slightly) different research questions.
Experimental Design Details
Randomization Method
Participants are randomly allocated to computer workstations by picking a numbered token with the number corresponding to the number of the workstation.
Randomization Unit
Individual.
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
We plan to collect data from 70 independent experimental groups.
Sample size: planned number of observations
We plan to observe behaviour (in the Birmingham Experimental Economics Laboratory) of 280 participants across 70 experimental groups.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
There will be two matching conditions: that is, a Friend matching condition and a Non-friend matching condition. The aimed sample size is of 50 groups in the Friend matching condition and 20 groups in the Non-friend matching condition. In total, the aimed sample size is 280 participants (i.e., 4 participant per group for 70 groups).
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
