Abstract
In this study, we work with one of the fastest-growing microfinance institutions in Pakistan to conduct a field experiment where we offer a relatively large amount of financing to microenterprise owners who have graduated from small-scale borrowing and expressed an interest in financing a fixed asset for their business. We use a shared-ownership contract to finance the purchase of the asset.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
We have designed two financial contracts to help finance the purchase of the assets, which differ in terms of the repayment flexibility permitted. They are discussed in detail in the pre-analysis plan document.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Our key hypothesis is that our treatments affect the performance of respondents’ businesses.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
Our primary outcome family, therefore, is the set of variables earlier labelled as ‘BUSINESS PERFORMANCE’, and described in detail in the pre-analysis plan document.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
We hypothesise that the treatments do this by increasing the stock of respondents' business assets.
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
Our primary family of mechanisms, therefore, is the set of variables earlier labelled as BUSINESS ASSETS, and described in detail in the pre-analysis plan document.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We use a randomised controlled trial design, in which respondents are assigned either to a control group or to one of two treatment groups. This process is described in more detail in the pre-analysis plan document.
Experimental Design Details
We use a randomised controlled trial design, in which respondents are assigned either to a control group or to one of two treatment groups. Individuals in treatment 1 are assignment to a fixed-repayment contract, and those in treatment 2 are offered a flexible-repayment contract to finance the purchase of their desired assets. Randomisation was stratified on microenterprise type, performance and gender, using matched sextuplets. This process is described in more detail in the pre-analysis plan document.
Randomization Method
Done by a computer.

Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
254 individuals assigned to control, 257 assigned to treatment 1, and 246 assigned to treatment 2.
