Intervention (Hidden) Intervention is conducted in an online survey. Participants are recruited through the Debra Paget and Jeffrey Berg Business Simulation Laboratory (“the Lab”), which is a Cornell University Institutional Review Board for Human Participants (IRB) approved recruitment system. Participants are told they will earn Amazon gift cards for participating, and they can earn more towards their gift cards based on their decisions in the study. All participants receive a personal email link to the survey 3 days before their participation deadline. Informed consent is obtained at the start of the survey. Participants first answer 50 Likert scale questions about their personality, which are then used to generate personal data. This personal data includes participants’ first and last name (collected by the Lab) and scores for five personality traits. The survey shows participants their generated personal data and provides information on how to interpret their scores. Then, all participants are told they will determine their willingness to share this data with other participants. Participants are randomly assigned to a treatment group, a control group, and a third group. The control group is assigned to share their information with one other participant. The treatment group is assigned to share their information with one other participant who will earn bonus money based on how much data they receive. A third group is assigned to share their information with many other participants. Participants are asked to indicate the smallest amount between $0 and $5 (in US Dollars) they would be willing to accept to release their data (or opt-out). The survey generates an offer price and determines participants’ data privacy and earnings outcomes. Finally, participants participate in a lottery to win additional bonus money towards their gift card if they complete the remaining survey exit questions. These questions include a basic survey of participants' social media activity, data privacy concerns, and acceptability of various data privacy scenarios. Participants also answer demographic questions, some of which overlap with the required pre-screening for the Lab. A week following the survey completion, the experimenter releases participants' personal data in an email to randomly, pre-selected participants. Participants also receive their Amazon gift cards with their total earnings. Intervention is conducted in an online survey.
