Interventions

Intervention(s)
We estimate the role of subjective expectations (earnings and ability) in determining the choice of academic curriculum in high school. We experimentally provide information on different job characteristics and test how students adjust their beliefs and actual choices of curriculum in response to the new information. We also examine the role of time and risk preferences in explaining the choice of curriculum in school.

Intervention End Date

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Choice of curriculum (expectations and actual), Schooling outcomes (Grades, enrollment), Valuation of information
Future outcomes (college enrollment, major choice, occupational choice)
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
See attached plan

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Risk aversion coefficient, discount rate
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)

Yes

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
32 schools
Sample size: planned number of observations
5,120 students
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
16 control schools, 16 treatment schools
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
With 16 clusters in each treatment arm, 160 students in each school and a baseline dropout rate of 21% in the state, we can detect an MDE of 6 percentage points reduction in the dropout rate (0.14 standard deviations with a power of 0.80).
