Abstract
Discount rates in developing countries have been found to be very high, at times in the order of 100% a year or more. We devise a method to separate pure rates of time discounting from perceptions of the future as inherently uncertain. We then measures these different quantities while experimentally varying the institution delivering the future payout.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We will experimentally vary the institution delivering future payouts.

Randomization Method
Lottery.
Randomization Unit

Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
800
Sample size: planned number of observations
We are planning to use 800 participants. However, we reserve the right to increase this number of the evidence should be inconclusive. We use a Bayesian setup with pre-registered regions of practical equivalents, which allow us to accept the null as well as reject it.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
200 for each of the 4 treatments.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
