Abstract
This project wants to address the causal effect of sibling's gender on labor market choices and outcomes. I plan to analyze detailed survey data in order to shed light on the previously found negative effects of having a younger sibling of the opposite gender on earnings.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
• Highest education qualification obtained
• Age at first job
• Age at first child
• Age at first marriage
• Percentage of time after age 25 observed in work
• Average log wage for individuals in a 5 year period.
• Fraction of females in the occupation of an individual .
• Fraction of time spent in a STEM occupation out of time spent in occupation.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
• Average log wage of the partner
• Number of own children
• Index on importance of mother or father
• Index of explicit gender stereotypes
• Index on gender appropriate behaviours
• Index on gender stereotypes within the family
• Implicit association test on gender and stereotypes
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
For each index I construct I follow the same steps: first, I standardize each of the variables around 0, I then redefine them such that they go in the same direction and I then sum them

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
I look at the effect of the gender of the next-born younger sibling on a first-born child and I do this separately by gender of the first-born child. Hence, I compare first-born women who have a second-born younger brother to first-born women who have a second-born younger sister, and the same for first-born men. This empirical strategy allows me to uncover the causal effect of the gender of one’s sibling, since once one conditions on the gender of the first child the gender of the second child is as good as random.

Randomization Method
Randomization is done by nature, since the gender of the next born child is as good as random.
