Intervention End Date August 31, 2020 November 30, 2020
Intervention (Hidden) The four conditions: 1. Suffering of Others 1: story about a woman who lost her job, and therefore her health insurance. 2. Suffering of Others 2: story about a woman who contracted COVID-19 and died from complications. 3. Risk to Self 1: story about how easily the coronavirus spreads through the air. 4. Risk to Self 2: story about a woman who died from COVID-19 complications. The control group does not read a story, but instead reads a statement about when the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic. The specific objectives are: 1. Investigate whether empathic state is evoked by stories about the suffering of other people who do not have adequate health coverage. 2. Investigate whether distress/negative state is evoked by stories about the risk to self if others people are not covered. 3. Investigate whether the stories increase support for health care policies to increase health insurance coverage in the U.S. The four conditions: 1.
