Abstract
We study the effect of role model gender on women in an entrepreneurship program. In the two arms of our RCT, volunteer Malaysians aged 18-28 are randomly assigned to an online course that utilizes either exclusively male or exclusively female exemplar entrepreneurs. These exemplars include both the examples and cases provided in class and two live talks given by Malaysian entrepreneurs. We hypothesize that treatment in the female arm will lower the degree of male stereotyping of entrepreneurship for both male and female participants. We also hypothesize that this male stereotyping will mediate pre-post changes in entrepreneurial intention (EI) and entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) for women but not men, so we expect strong correlations between our measure of gendered entrepreneurial stereotype and EI and ESE. Finally, we expect the female exemplar treatment to have a positive treatment effect on EI and ESE for women but not for men.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
Participants--low income Malaysians 18-28--will undertake an online entrepreneurship course focused on micro-entrepreneurship in the local context--for example, selling a homemade product online or starting a small restaurant. This course will present many examples of successful entrepreneurs and will also require students to attend and reflect on live Zoom discussion sessions with local entrepreneurs.
Intervention Start Date
2021-02-26
Intervention End Date
2021-07-30

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Entrepreneurial intention battery (EI)--six items, entrepreneurial self-efficacy battery (ESE)--six items, Entrepreneurial gender stereotype--one item.
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
EI--first factor of the EI battery. ESE--first factor of the ESE battery.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Reflections on entrepreneur Zoom sessions (text).
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
Sentiment--sentiment analysis of each student's.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two versions of this class: one with male entrepreneurial exemplars and one with female exemplars.
Experimental Design Details
Randomization Method
Randomization done in office by a computer for each student assignment.
Randomization Unit
Individual
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
1,000 students
Sample size: planned number of observations
1,000 students
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
500 students for each treatment.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
For male outcomes, assuming 400 participants, we can detect a standardized effect size of 0.28 standard deviations, assuming an R^2 of 0.04. For female outcomes, assuming 600 participants, we can detect a standardized effect size of 0.23 standard deviations.
