Abstract
This preregistration describes an online experiment investigating reinforcement in a belief-updating task with various incentive levels and a Removal of Valence treatment. We describe the experimental design, the variables of interest, the hypotheses, and sample size. The experiment is conducted online via the University of Zurich experiment recruiting system and Qualtrics (study).

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Error Rates when State of the World is not revealed
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
Individual relative frequency of errors in the second draw (choosing the urn not prescribed by Bayesian updating) when the left urn was selected during the first draw.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Response Times
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
Individual average response times of errors and correct decisions in the second draw in conflict and alignment situations in the Baseline Treatment.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design

We describe the experimental design, the variables of interest, the hypotheses, and sample size. The experiment is conducted online via the University of Zurich experiment recruiting system and Qualtrics (study).
Experimental Design Details
see attached PDF.
Randomization Method
Randomization done by computer (Qualtrics).
Randomization Unit
Incentives randomized across individuals between 5 and 30 rappen for a correct draw (integer values).
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
208 subjects.
Sample size: planned number of observations
208 subjects (104 for Baseline Treatment and 104 for Removal-of-Valence Treatment).
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
4 observations for 26 different incentive levels for each treatment.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
