Abstract
Measuring the size of the LGBT+ population, homophobia and discriminatory practices in surveys is difficult. Understanding the extent of these identities and behaviors is important for policy design and implementation. We run an intervention using an item count technique to recover both the (closer to the) true prevalence of these identities and behaviors and an implicit measure of the cost of revealing this information socially. Our setting is large metropolitan areas in Mexico. We then relate these experimental measures with labor market choices, such as participating in the informal economy.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Difference in the implied fraction of the LGBTQ+ population and prevalence of homophobia and discrimination when recovered from the item count technique vs from direct questions

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Item count technique: survey that presents N statements and asks respondents to say how many (but not which) are true for them. The treatment group receives a sensitive statement related to the questions we are measuring in addition to the N statements. The control group (or direct question group) does not. The control group is also asked the sensitive question separately.
