Abstract Examine how incentives improve career search process and labor market outcomes for college students. This study examines whether greater engagement with career resources during college helps improve undergraduate students' career outcomes.
Trial Start Date May 01, 2024 July 01, 2025
Trial End Date September 30, 2028 September 30, 2029

Intervention (Public) We will examine the impact of incentives on engagement in the career search process and labor market outcomes for undergraduates at a large university. The intervention will randomly incentivize some participants to increase their engagement with career search activities during the academic year.
Intervention Start Date July 01, 2024 September 11, 2026
Intervention End Date July 01, 2025 December 31, 2027
Primary Outcomes (End Points) job offers Students’ career outcomes, including engagement in the career search process, the number and type of internship or job offers received, and other intermediate stages in the career search process (e.g., interviews).
Primary Outcomes (Explanation) job offers: number, type, salary level, benefits, location Please see uploaded pre-analysis plan for more detail on the primary outcomes.
Experimental Design (Public) We will randomize students into Treatment and Control groups to measure the impact of incentives on engagement in the career search process and labor market outcomes. The study is an individually randomized evaluation among undergraduate students. After consenting and completing an initial survey, participants will be assigned either to a comparison group with access to existing career resources or to a group offered monetary incentives to nudge them to utilize more career resources. Outcomes will be measured using surveys and administrative records over the academic year and, where available, after the academic year.
Randomization Method by computer 50/50 randomization will be conducted by computer.
Randomization Unit individual Individual student
Planned Number of Clusters N/A Not clustered
Planned Number of Observations Approximately 4000 students N = 500 undergraduate students (minimum)
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms ~1000 in each arm With two treatment arms, each arm will have a sample size of N/2.
Power calculation: Minimum Detectable Effect Size for Main Outcomes Please see uploaded pre-analysis plan for more detail on the power calculations.
Intervention (Hidden) We will examine the impact of incentives on engagement in the career search process and labor market outcomes for undergraduates at a large university. In particular, we will provide monetary incentives to improve the quality and/or quantity of job applications for full-time and internship positions. Please see uploaded pre-analysis plan for more detail on the study design and execution.
Secondary Outcomes (End Points) Please see uploaded pre-analysis plan for more detail on the secondary outcomes.
Secondary Outcomes (Explanation) Please see uploaded pre-analysis plan for more detail on the secondary outcomes.
