Abstract
This study evaluates the impact of the LnL (Living & Learning) Program, a residential college program launched in March 2023 by Seoul National University (SNU). The purpose of the LnL program is to enable students from various majors and backgrounds to cohabit in a dormitory for a year, immersing themselves in diverse experiences. Out of the freshmen who applied for the LnL program, 235 were randomly chosen to live together for one year. In collaboration with the SNU, we will evaluate the impact of the LnL program on academic and non-academic outcomes using information obtained from surveys and students' records.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
Students participating in the LnL program live together in a dormitory for a year, engaging in various experiences. They form teams of 20 and participate in academic programs, including student-led seminars and group discussions on academic subjects. In addition to academic activities, they also participate in various extracurricular programs, which range from cultural activities to sports, travel, and more.

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Primary outcomes can be categorized into two domains:
1. Academic outcome: major choice, grades, the number and type of course credits, studying activities
2. Non-academic outcomes: school life, extracurricular activities, social interaction, leadership and teamwork, personality and self-esteem, happiness and wellness
Primary Outcomes (explanation)

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Secondary outcomes can be categorized into two domains:
1. Career outcome: future career plan, preferred job
2. Preferences, beliefs, and attitudes outcome: social preferences, pro-social behavior, trust, gender attitudes, perception of social position, belief in social mobility

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Before the semester started, SNU took applications from freshmen for the LnL program. Out of the 885 applicants, 235 students were randomly selected through a competitive rate of 3.6 to 1. The selection was done through a random drawing, ensuring a 50% gender ratio, and adjusted so that residents from the metropolitan area did not exceed 40%. Additionally, applicants were selected in proportion to the number of applicants from each college, with a minimum number of entrants set for each college.

The 235 students who were selected to participate in the LnL Program were assigned to the treatment group. Out of the freshmen who applied but were not selected in the lottery, 470 students were randomly chosen using the same criteria as the treatment group and assigned to control group 1. Out of the freshmen who did not apply, 235 were randomly chosen using the same criteria as the treatment group and assigned to control group 2.

We plan to gather information on these 940 students through surveys and existing student records at SNU. In September 2023, a first survey will be conducted, followed by a second survey in February 2024. The survey consists of questions about school life, studying activities, extracurricular activities, career plans, teamwork and leadership, social interaction, personality, happiness and wellness, and various preferences and attitudes. With the cooperation of the SNU, we also plan to exploit students' academic records (major choice, grades, number and kind of course credits).
