Abstract
We plan to conduct a laboratory experiment to test the effect of the gender distribution on selection into cheap-talk environments. This document pre-registers the experimental design, the hypotheses as well as the sample size.

Experimental Details

Interventions

Intervention(s)
We run a lab experiment with 3 different treatments: 1) gender not revealed to voters, 2) gender revealed to voters, 3) gender revealed to voters and higher winning probabilities of female politicians.
Intervention Start Date
2023-11-02
Intervention End Date
2024-10-01

Primary Outcomes

Primary Outcomes (end points)
Investment level in first stage, transfer level in second stage
Primary Outcomes (explanation)
These are choices of the players (politicians) in the experiment.

Secondary Outcomes

Secondary Outcomes (end points)
Voting behavior
Secondary Outcomes (explanation)
These are choices of the players (voters) in the experiment.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We run a laboratory experiment where players are either in the role of a Voter or a Politician. Politicians can choose an investment level for a first stage tournament, a promise for the voting stage, and a transfer for the case of being elected into office. Voters see politicians promises and, depending on treatment, also the gender. Further details can be found in 'Experimental Design (Hidden)'

Randomization Method
We vary the treatments between sessions. Every other allocation is randomly chosen by the computer/ zTree.
Randomization Unit
We randomize treatments between experimental sessions.
Was the treatment clustered?
Yes

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
18 sessions
Sample size: planned number of observations
21 subjects per session X 18 sessions = 378 subjects
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
6 sessions (126 subjects) for each of the three treatments.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
see attached file for details on the power calculation
