Abstract
Many health products - including mosquito nets - are now largely provided at no cost in poor countries. However these products, although free, are not always used. This study will report the results from a two-stage mobile health randomized experiment coupled with tailored information given on infectious status at midline.

Interventions

Intervention(s)
A two-phases randomized controlled trial was conducted at the individual level to evaluate the effect of reminders on the use of bednets. The first intervention was a SMS-based intervention from July 1st to Nov 1st 2016 (Phase 1). The second intervention called households directly from July 1st to Nov 1st 2017 (Phase 2). Messages were the same in Phase 1 (SMS) and Phase 2 (Calls). Six simple generic malaria specific messages and six simple generic general public health messages were defined in French by an interdisciplinary team working on the project. Messages were sent with similar frequencies in Phase 1 and 2.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We used a stratified random sample made in 2013 after a census of the area to select 4 neighborhoods and about 900 households in Bobo Dioulasso. Households were assigned in 5 groups corresponding to: (1) control (295 HHs), (2) Malaria specific messages with high frequency (147 HHs), (3) Malaria specific messages with low frequency (147 HHs), (4) Health specific messages with high frequency (147 HHs), (4) Health specific messages with low frequency (147 HHs). Allocation of the 885 HHs into these 5 arms was done within 4 neighborhoods in Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso).

Sample size: planned number of observations
885 Households and 4 surveys (panel data). 2013-2017.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
4 arms of 147 HHs + 1 control group of 295 HHs.
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
