Abstract

We study what respondents in Denmark know about their relative income positions in various reference groups. References groups are, among others, education groups, cohorts, sectors, or municipalities. Thanks to the match to administrative data from Statistics Denmark, we can check whether respondents know their relative positions accurately. We randomly provide a subset of respondents with information about their position and see how this changes their views on various policies.

We administer an online survey to respondents in Denmark, eliciting their perceptions about their relative positions in the income distributions of different reference groups. We show respondents information about their actual position in these income distributions and see whether that information shapes their views on different policies.

The key outcome variables of the experimental part are all the views on fairness and the views on all the policies. The key outcomes of the descriptive part are the measures of misperceptions of respondents' positions in the income distributions of the reference groups.

Primary Outcomes (explanation)

We will use a lot of the policy questions as such, but we will also construct redistribution support indices that summarize the general pattern of redistribution support, based on standardized z-scores of the responses to all policy questions. We will do the same for the variables asking about the perceived fairness of the system. Finally, we will also construct measures of the misperceptions of respondents by subtracting their true position inside the different reference groups from their perceived relative positions.

We are interested in heterogeneity by the background characteristics of respondents and will thus look at outcomes by sub-groups as defined by income, age, gender, political affiliation.

10,000 individuals (We will send out invitations to 50,000 respondents hoping for a 20% response rate. If we do not get enough respondents, we have up to 100,000 possible respondents to send invitations to).
