Abstract
This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic and related "shelter in place" orders on labor market outcomes, economic insecurity, and safety net utilization for a representative sample of US adults. We rely on the Understanding America Study (UAS), a probability-based Internet panel. We fielded a baseline survey related to COVID-19 perceptions and avoidance behaviors in March 2020. Beginning in April, we will conduct a rolling panel survey that measures economic outcomes every two weeks. We will rely on difference-in-difference and event study empirical strategies.

Experimental Design

Experimental Design
We randomize respondents to survey days over a 14-day interval. Each day, 1/14 of respondents answer the survey. After 14 days the next panel wave begins. This design allows us to estimate event study analyses with the assurance that respondents on Day t and Day t+k are comparable in expectation. The randomization was stratified by age (greater or less than 60), gender, and the most recently recorded employment status.
