Experimental Design

Experimental Design
Details of the outcome variables are kept private until the trial is complete.
Experimental Design Details
Applicants will be randomised into two groups (with equal probability of assignment to either group). Applicants in the treatment group will complete a form that contains the five prompts of interest. Applicants in the control group will complete a form that does not have these five prompts.
As primary outcome measures, we will track:
1. dropout rates. Dropouts are defined as forms that have been inactive for 14 days at the end of the trial
2. the number (count) of assets (real estate, vehicles) reported in the bankruptcy form,
3. the average monetary value (in $) per asset (real estate, vehicles) reported in the bankruptcy form, and
4. total self-reported income (in $) for the current and upcoming year.
Randomization Method
The randomization will be done automatically when applicants create a registration on the government website. Each applicant will have a 50% chance of ending up in each of the two arms of the trial. This method approximates a coin flip.
Randomization Unit
The randomization unit is the individual. There is only a single level of randomization.
Was the treatment clustered?
No

Experiment Characteristics

Sample size: planned number of clusters
1400 individuals. We are aiming for 700 individuals in each arm of the trial; due to the randomisation process our final sample size may be slightly larger than 1400 individuals.
Sample size: planned number of observations
1400 individuals.
Sample size (or number of clusters) by treatment arms
700 individuals per treatment arm
Minimum detectable effect size for main outcomes (accounting for sample design and clustering)
Cohen's d = 0.15 We are specifying a standardised effect size here because we have different outcome measures (hidden until trial completed) with different units and standard deviations.
